Celebrations even though death!

On last Tuesday (22nd Sept.) evening, one of my relative staying in Vastrapur, Ahmedabad passed away. He was took for funeral at 8.30 pm. When we came back after last rituals, we were shocked to see celebrations of Garba were going on with loud music playing through loud speakers! Have we become so much insensitive that we forget one death in our society?

Please note that society is not too big and Garba were being played exactly opposite that block where death happened!

I remember one case of my life. It was of my childhood. In 1982-83 we were returning to our home at Ranavav, Dis. Porbandar in autorikshaw. Music was being played in rikshaw. As there was death of one old lady, staying exactly opposite our home, music was stopped as soon as we entered in gally where our home was located.

Really time has much changed! Today’s people believe in one mantra - Jalsa Kar Bapu Jalsa Kar.

There are millions starving to death in Africa and many parts of India. Would you give up at least one meal a week so that you are expressing solidarity with them????

Dear friend Indian,
there are thousand of death occuring in world every day. We can not mourn over it every day. My point was about death of our nearby-our neighbour, death in our society. And yes if big catastrophe happens in any part of world...like 26 November attacks or tsunami...we can give up at least one or more meals.

Yes there are thousands being killed by foreign and local terrorists in our country... thinking of that nobody in our country should celebrate any festival.. every Indian Killed is a huge loss to the country and worthy of grieving... greater grief than someone who dies of natural causes or old age... even if it is a neighbor... For this reason precisely on a personal level I have stopped celebrating all festivals since the past several years....

It is not to stop celebrate all festivals but just when somebody staying nearby you or somebody who relates to you or when big catastrophe happens, you should express solidarity with them by not celebrating anything. We had that custom as I mentioned in above post.

Sorry for making a nearly out of context comment..I am in tune with what you have said in the post.Yes, we should try to feel the pain residing in our neghbhour’s heart.Let’s not become so insensitive that we fail to realize that somebody is crying in home close to our home!!

However, some years back I read an article that death is a time to enter in celebrations.Based on the theme there is a certain community that enters in celebrations instead of shedding tears when a death takes place .Sadly, I don’t remember the name of that tribal community.

Probably, that’s why Hindus have given rise to tradition of ”Terahi”.It’s another thing that these healthy traditions have given way to their distorted forms.
